Rudolf Storz invests in an automation solution 

The production of medical instruments requires maximum precision, stable processes and a high degree of adaptability. By using a new robot system in conjunction with the ALLMATIC RoboBuddy, Rudolf Storz was able to automate two existing machines, significantly reduce through put times and increase the capacity of each machine. ‘The existing automation was simply no longer up to date,’ explains Andreas Lang, responsible for CNC production at Rudolf Storz. ‘The technology was getting on in years and simply no longer met our current requirements – production is constantly evolving, so the systems have to keep up.’
As part of its modernisation plans, Rudolf Storz decided not only to replace the existing automation solution, but also to upgrade a second existing machine with the same technology. The goal: to produce the wide range of workpieces as efficiently and flexibly as possible – with minimal personnel costs and without investing in new machines or additional clamping devices.
Since the implementation of the new automation solution, production has been running continuously – without additional personnel costs. During the unmanned night shift, the robot system takes over all handling tasks, while the RoboBuddy operates the clamping devices. The entire process is fully automated and highly reliable.
‘The workplace is not being replaced but relocated. While the machine is running, the employee can continue working on another machine – this increases efficiency and organisation throughout the entire team,’ emphasises Lang. A clear sign that automation does not threaten jobs.
In addition, automation creates the basis for economically managing the increasing order intake and growing variety of parts. At the same time, qualified employees are relieved of some of their workload and can apply their expertise where it delivers the greatest added value.
‘Automation not only helps us to manufacture more efficiently – it also supports our growth. Without the new solution, we would not be able to handle today’s volumes economically with our team,’ explains team leader Kamper.
